Following the Second, they once again turn to a work that pushes the boundaries of the symphonic form: Mahler’s Third takes us from archaic natural forces through dance, folk music and grotesque humour to music of profound existential and spiritual intensity.
Poschner approaches this multifaceted score with exceptional clarity of sound and rhythmic precision. The enormous orchestral forces are not treated as a monumental block of sound, but as a highly differentiated fabric in which inner voices, motivic connections and unexpected colours remain clearly audible. The extreme contrasts of the Third Symphony – between natural sound and art music, grotesque humour and grandeur, outward movement and inward contemplation – thus acquire an immediate impact.
