“Out Here” is a brand new album by Lotto. Łukasz Rychlicki, Mike Majkowski and Paweł Szpura have been joined by Lithuanian-born vocalist Dominika, who performs as lazydolphin.

“In late spring 2025 we played a few concerts and, as usual, we tried to do something new on the occasion. That’s when the forms started heading in a more melodic direction, at times beginning to resemble songs (the outline of ‘How Lovely’ was written around that time). We went into it quite willingly, the concerts went really well, and after the last one, in Szczecin, we started talking about whether this might be a good moment to try doing something with vocals,” says guitarist Łukasz Rychlicki.

Voice had appeared on the band’s recordings before. “The idea wasn’t new – it came up every now and then during earlier recordings, but in the end we only used vocal parts on ‘Axolotl’, where Antonina Nowacka and lazydolphin sang. And it was Paweł, who had known Dominika for some time, who suggested working with her. We sent her a recording from one of those concerts, asking if she’d like to give it a try, and after listening she was interested,” explains Rychlicki. “We planned the next rehearsals as a four-piece, and everything clicked perfectly. There was no way back – we became a quartet,” he adds.

Along with the line-up, the form of the pieces has changed too: on “Out Here” the band moves away from long instrumental loops towards song forms. “With this band, we’ve always been guided by intuition and curiosity. Lotto is an example of complete artistic freedom, where we’ve always done what we wanted. The form of something like a music genre has never interested or limited us,” says Rychlicki. “We’ve always had the attitude of searching for something, of running away from easy solutions. Whenever we decided that something was becoming too easy for us, we ran away from it and looked for challenges.”

The guitarist contrasts this approach with the situation in the music market. “It’s kind of the opposite of the rule that governs something like the music industry, where you’re forced to stick to your direction and build a fan base of people who don’t like change. Something as simple and trivial as switching from double bass to bass guitar could make, say, a jazz fan stop listening to us,” he explains. “Of course, a lover of long loops doesn’t necessarily have to accept the new form, but I hope we’ll part ways with mutual respect, and the earlier records will still be there for them. Besides, the music changes, but it’s still played by the same people. You can hear that even in these song forms.”

Melody was also a starting point for the new material. “Personally, I also started to be bothered by the Polish underground’s inability to create melodies. I wanted to get deeper into that, already knowing that a form with singing was taking shape, so that there would be room for melody. And since it isn’t easy – in fact it’s very difficult – why not try it?” says Rychlicki.
