Among the most exciting rediscoveries in the field of early music today is the work of Agostino Steffani (1654–1728). During his lifetime, the Italian-born composer, diplomat and cleric was one of the leading figures of European musical life. His operas united the expressive vocal tradition of Italy with French elegance and German musical craftsmanship, forging a distinctive musical language that paved the way for composers such as George Frideric Handel. Yet after his death, his stage works largely disappeared from the repertoire.
